Over 100 Years of Customer-Focused Innovation
Our history began in 1885 as a plumbing and family business in the town of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Along with his son Reuben, a mechanical engineer, James Trane developed an innovative low-pressure steam heater. By 1913 the family business had become The Trane Company.
Over the next hundred years, we have cemented our position as pioneers in climate control. In 1931 we patented our first air conditioner. Seven years later we developed Turbovac; a new type of chiller that fundamentally changed the market for air conditioning in large buildings. These early innovations paved the way for the CenTraVac™ air conditioner – the most reliable, highest efficiency, lowest emission water chiller on the market.
With the acquisition of Sentinel Electronics in the late 1970s and General Electric's Central Air Conditioning Division in 1982, we expanded our offerings for residential buildings and energy management. In 1984, American Standard Companies acquired the Trane Company and four years later launched the American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning brand. In 2007, the American Standard Companies separated, allowing us to renew our focus and leadership in integrated HVAC services and solutions. In June 2008, Trane was acquired by Ingersoll Rand. Since March 2020 we have been trading as Trane Technologies. Today we are a climate innovator focused on developing sustainable heating, cooling and transport refrigeration solutions. We have a global presence and continue to grow rapidly. With our innovative, intelligent and customer-specific solutions, buildings become safer, more comfortable, more cost-effective and more sustainable. Through our extensive cooperation with industry and consumers, we are constantly developing innovative solutions that meet the requirements of dynamic markets.
