Manufacturer Rendamax has joined the MEPcontent platform and has already made a range of condensing boilers available for download. The boilers are either floor standing or wall mounted and have an output from 60 to 1.870 kW. Sustainable MEP design with BIM content

With increased demands for sustainable design in the construction process coming from regulatory institutions, as well as the general public and project owners, MEP specialists have to be properly equipped to respond to market expectations. Sustainable engineering is not only on a mission to avoid natural damage and reduce waste, but it also aims to increase comfort and utility in the building and increase bottom-line revenues by saving energy.

What does sustainable design mean?


Designing in a sustainable way means being aware of the impact generated by human activity and planning it in such ways that the damaging effects on the surroundings and finite resources are diminished or completely eliminated.

Moreover, green design is aligned with traditional considerations about construction, such as utility, comfort or durability of the building. In fact, it aims to significantly improve the overall experience by reducing the costs of operation and maintenance. This is possible through the use of more efficient technology based on alternative energy sources other than fossil fuels, that generate outputs in an economical manner.

Sustainable design thinking is ideally present throughout the life cycle of a building, from the planning and design phase, to estimating, to construction, operation and finally maintenance.

Why should you mind?


As a study produced by the Department of Industry and Science showed, HVAC equipment and systems are responsible for more than 41% of all primary energy consumption in a building. By optimizing MEP systems with the aim of reducing energy consumption and increasing conform at the same time, buildings will become more efficient, and ultimately more profitable, since the costs associated with generating energy per year will decrease accordingly. There are several ways you can start implementing sustainable HVAC design strategies in your projects.

Solar panels (photovoltaic panels)


Solar energy has been around for years and is a leading renewable energy source alongside wind power, hydropower and geothermal energy. In Germany for instance, solar power was responsible for 5.9% of the country total electricity generation in 2016, according to a Strom Report.

  • Remeha’s solar collectors can drastically improve energy efficiency in a building. Installed in combination with boilers (e.g. Calenta series) and thermostats. The resulting configuration becomes a solar-thermal hybrid system that can safely be labeled eco-friendly.

High efficiency heat pumps


Traditional fuel-based energy sources such as boilers that run on coal are less and less used in modern construction projects. That is because they are very CO2 intensive, generating large amounts of carbon emissions that are sent into the atmosphere contributing to pollution and consequently to global warming.

So far governments and councils of scientists have proved unable to find a scalable way to extract the carbon from the atmosphere that has already been released through combustion. That means the only way to stop endangering our ecosystem further is to stop emitting nocive substances in order to power our everyday lives.

Some very popular alternative energy sources are heat pumps, and that is not only due to the environmental reasons attached to them. Heat pumps have a very good COP (coefficient of performance). This represents the ratio between the amount of resources needed and the heating and cooling produced based on that input. A normal heat pump will on average produce 4kW of heat for every 1kW of electricity put in which is equivalent to a COP of 4. For gas heating system, we are generally looking at a COP of around 0.85. So not only are heat pumps greener, but they are also great money savers.

  • The aroTHERM Split heat pump from Vaillant is suitable for semi-detached homes and single-family houses. It is formed by two components: an indoor and an outdoor unit. The system uses the heat stored in the outside air and transforms it into energy that can be controlled to regulate the inside temperature.

  • The Hisense VRF HI-FLEXI M Series inverter air conditioner systems generate significant improvement in operation efficiency under partial load. This is because of the high-efficiency scroll compressor featured with leading frequency inverter control technology.

  • The EnviLine outdoor unit - Split or Monoblock - is combined with a bivalent wall-mounted EnviLine indoor unit and an external auxiliary heater, such as a central heating boiler or a wood or pellet stove. An advantage of this variant is that the control of the heat pump continuously determines whether it is more cost-efficient to use the heat pump or the auxiliary heater. Nefit solar panels can be connected directly to the indoor unit for green power supply.

  • ALEC (ATAG's Low Energy Concept) is a hybrid boiler that uses solar energy for heating and hot water with very high domestic hot water performance. This is a hybrid system with an energy storage tank that allows a very low energy consumption.

Air Conditioners powered by AI


Data can be used to automate certain processes that can increase efficiency and reduce waste, such as in the case of artificial intelligence powered HVAC systems. Weather conditions can now be monitored an predicted with up to one hour ahead and the functioning of the air conditioners and heat pumps alike can be adapted to the newly acquired set of information.

  • Fujitsu heat pumps and air conditioners use input about outside temperatures and humidity to make their own automated decisions about air cooling and air temperatures. By relying on AI data to control the functioning of the system in the best way, optimal energy use is ensured.

  • Air conditioners from Mitsubishi Electric are equipped with advanced sensor units that monitor the locations of people in the room, their level of activity, can measure floor temperatures, and temperature changes in the room if curtains are opened and closed, and more. Based on the data obtained this way, the operations are optimized by automatically adjusting air-conditioning levels.

Ventilation with heat recovery


Another important goal of green building is ensuring indoor environmental quality. Indoor spaces need to be properly insulated and ventilated in order to prevent the accumulation of moisture that can cause mold and other bacteria and viruses to form. Quality of life is ideally achieved by correctly insulating buildings and making use of efficient ventilation technologies.

  • The Air 70 from Brink Climate Systems is a quiet decentralized unit that requires no ducts and can completely be built into the outside wall. The system uses the air that rises upwards after being heated by machines and people to warm up the fresh air that is blown in from outside. This is done through the built-in heat exchanger which means that there is hardly any heat loss and still healthy ventilation at all times.

  • Air Excellent from Ubbink is a complete air distribution system that guarantees lower pressure losses than traditional systems due to its radial design. This means lower energy consumption overall. Moreover, the mechanical connections ensure long-term airtightness which reduces the risk of damage over time.

  • Uniflexplus+ from Ventilair Group is an air distribution system for ventilation that can be used in residential buildings, apartment buildings and small utilities. The inside of the system has been treated with antistatic and anti-bacterial additives, which means the Uniflexplus+ is designed to prevent contamination in the system.

  • The ECOFAN recirculation fan from MARK Climate Technology will redistribute the warm blanket of air that forms under the roof to the living area. This way, the air heater will be able to provide heating faster and the energy consumption can be reduced by up to 30%.

Smart control units and sensors


These devices can be controlled through smartphones or tablets and allow homeowners to control their heating and cooling systems from wherever they are. Residents can get an overview of the energy consumption over time and optimize it by setting their preferences.

  • The CO2 sensors from Orcon will monitor the level of carbon dioxide in a living area and only command the required amount of ventilation to start when the CO2 level increases above a certain value. This way, the resident can enjoy extra comfort and energy savings.

  • The Healthbox ventilation system from Renson checks the air quality 24 hours a day for CO2 or moisture and/or VOC's (odor) per room. The ventilation level per room is fully automatically adjusted in function of the measured air quality (based on sensors in the control modules). As long as the air quality in a room is good, the ventilation level is not increased.

Composite OEM Industry


The composite OEM manifold is available in different versions. Thanks to the insulating air chambers around the hydraulic passage there is no condensation during cooling. In heating mode the air chambers make sure that the heat loss is reduced to a minimum. The composite OEM manifold can be supplied with a pump set in case of a high-temperature system or without for heat pump installations.

The composite manifold is used to distribute the medium in installations for underfloor heating and cooling. This series of manifolds is produced out of a special composite to be installed in low-temperature systems. The model LTV is fitted with a regulating valve to limit the amount of water from the return manifold. The most frightening traps when working with BIM content

When dealing with BIM content, there are two most important things that come above everything else. Making the correct choice about what content to use based on technical, maintenance and cost information and making sure the content you download is reliable and contains correct information. Here are 6 ways to make sure you chose the best content for your projects and here you can read more about what criteria guarantees the quality of your content.

We identified a couple of traps that can potentially be threatening to the correct use of BIM content in projects. And we also came up with a solution to completely eliminate these.

1. Files downloaded and stored locally



It goes without saying that downloading files on your computer and only using them after a few weeks, when you need them for a project, is not the perfect approach to working with BIM content.

The information contained in the files is in danger of getting depreciated since the content is no longer in synchronization with the platform, where any product changes are immediately made available.

2. Forgotten bookmarks



Bookmarks are actually great ways to store sources that you want to revisit when in need for specific content. But ask yourself if your bookmark structure is organized well enough that you can quickly find a page you saved a few months ago.

And even if you are a guru of organisation (kudos to you for that), bookmarks don’t have the ability to friendly remind you: “Hey, here’s a page that you really need right now, but you totally forgot about.” Unless you don’t manually open the bookmarks menu, the links stored there are forever lost.

3. Skimmed newsletter content updates



Every week you can be sure that at least two or three content highlights of the week from different manufacturers can be found in your inbox, in the MEPcontent newsletter.

But maybe you are reading the email in your lunch break, or in the evening, and you don’t really need the content at that specific moment. Valves, seperators and air vents from Caleffi

197 new articles from Caleffi can now be imported in Stabicad with the function ‘Import Product Lines’. The PLS contains articles that include properties and dimensions which makes them suitable to be placed dimensionally stable in AutoCAD and Revit MEP.

Valves


Caleffi is the leading Italian manufacturer of high-quality components for heating, cooling and plumbing systems and a supplier of high-performance hydronic solutions. They offer a wide range of valves for several uses including mixing valves, safety relief valves, fuel shut-off valves, temperature relief valves, differential by-pass valves and much more.

Air vents


Automatic air vents are designed to remove the air that accumulates in heating and cooling systems without the need for manual intervention. This prevents harmful air that may compromise the life and the performance of the system which includes:
  • corrosion due to the oxygen
  • pockets of air trapped in the heating emitters
  • cavitation in the circulation pumps
  • noise from air passing through the pipes

The accumulation of air bubbles in the air vent body causes the float to drop and thus the vent valve to open. The air vent functions correctly, as long as the water pressure remains below the maximum discharge pressure.

Air separators


Caleffi air separators use a coalescing element that consists of an element of concentric diamond pattern mesh surfaces. This element creates the whirling movement required to facilitate the release of micro-bubbles and their adhesion to these surfaces. The bubbles, fusing with each other, increase in volume until the bouyancy force overcomes the adhesion force to the surface. They rise to the top of the unit from where they are released through a float-operated automatic air release valve.

The Quest for BIM Objects: 6 Proven Methods to Choose the Best Content

It can be challenging to make a decision about what BIM content to use in a project. As the MEP engineer you might sometimes be pulled in several directions by the project owner, the architect and other parties taking part in the project.

There are actually two ways to approach this decision:

  1. Make your decision based on previous experience with manufacturer items and input from stakeholders -> search for content on trusted platforms -> download and place files

  2. Regularly review the content published on trusted platforms -> research product specific information and reviews from peers -> make your decision based on your knowledge and project specifications -> download and place files

1. Every week, look for the MEPcontent newsletter in your inbox


In the weekly newsletter we include the most important updates about new manufacturers joining the MEPcontent platform or new items being published. If you click on the button below each article, you will be directed to a page where you will find valuable information about the item such as best conditions in which to use it, strengths and weaknesses or background information about the manufacturing company. You can additionally visit the website of the manufacturer itself for more technical and detailed information on the product. Even if you don’t download the items straight away, at least you know what your options are.

2. Set yourself a goal to check the platform regularly and commit to it


Emails can get buried in your inbox before you get the time to read them, but there are always ways around that, since time is one of the biggest challenges today for everybody. Create a task for yourself to visit MEPcontent.com to check for the latest content updates. The latest content added will always appear on the top of the BIM overview page. Don’t forget to select the country of your choice to view the localizations available for your region. The frequency of the reminder can be daily, weekly, every few days, or as often as you think necessary. You can use this Google Chrome extension to be sure you don’t forget the commitment you made to yourself.

3. Use bookmarks to stay organized


In order to be sure that the content you are using is up-to-date, it is actually not such a good idea to download and store files locally. When there are changes made to an item, your local library will not sync automatically with the one available online, which means that you run the risk of using outdated content. In order to avoid that, but still keep yourself organized, you can use Internet bookmarks. We recommend creating a general “MEPcontent” folder that contains several sub folders named after the manufacturers that are of most interest to you. Alternatively, you can organize your folders according to categories. For instance, the general folder ”Mechanical” can contain the sub folders “Pipes”, “Valves”, “Pumps” where you store product pages from items that you would like to use for future projects. 4. Follow manufacturers on MEPcontent


What many MEPcontent users don’t know yet is that you can actually follow manufacturers and get personalized notifications by email when new content from them is published. It’s just like following friends on Facebook or other social platforms to get notified about their activity. You can find the “Follow” on each product page, such as this one for a Mitsubishi Electric heat pump. Look under the manufacturer information on the right side of the screen.

5. Automatically get notified when relevant updates are published


In the news section on MEPcontent we regularly publish closely verified information about BIM and MEP to help designers gain knowledge and practical information about the industry. Some of these news items end up in the newsletter, but not all of them. In order to be sure you don't miss important updates, or if you are not a big fan of email because your inbox gets cluttered too fast, you can choose to receive these updates as browser notifications. Just do a hard refresh of the MEPcontent website (Ctrl + F5 for Windows or ⇧ Shift and Reload for MAC) to clear the cookies and click "Allow" in the window that will appear next. È così che gli italiani adottano il BIM

I livelli di adozione del BIM variano in tutto il mondo. Tuttavia, nessun paese rimane indifferente al nuovo modo di lavorare e l'Italia non è diversa. Infatti, secondo gli ultimi dati, il valore dei progetti BIM nel settore pubblico ha superato i 2,6 miliardi nel 2016, con un incremento del 30% rispetto all'anno precedente. Kim Smit, business development specialist di MEPcontent, parla degli ultimi sviluppi del BIM in Italia e fornisce una panoramica sull'industria in trasformazione.

Come si confronta l'Italia con gli altri paesi per quanto riguarda il BIM?


Anche se l'Italia non è stata in prima linea nell'adozione del BIM in Europa, abbiamo visto una crescita molto significativa nel 2018. I produttori italiani che hanno recentemente iniziato con l'implementazione del BIM nella loro organizzazione hanno imparato dalle sfide dei primi pionieri (concorrenti) a loro vantaggio: ora è il momento giusto per i produttori italiani di prepararsi al BIM. Ancora più importante, i produttori possono attualmente trarre vantaggio dalle più recenti e innovative soluzioni BIM disponibili sul mercato, che vanno ben oltre la - diciamo – tradizionale creazione di contenuti. I progettisti beneficiano naturalmente di queste soluzioni nei loro flussi di lavoro quotidiani e i produttori ne tengono sempre più conto quando si tratta della loro strategia BIM.

Guarda cosa sta facendo il tuo paese in termini di adozione del BIM.

Quindi, l'adozione del BIM sembra in crescita, giusto?


Se guardiamo al numero di utenti italiani della nostra piattaforma vediamo una crescita significativa del 48,5% nel 2018, portando l'Italia nella top 10 sia per il numero di visitatori che per i numeri di download. Vediamo anche importanti studi di progettisti italiani che sono disposti a testare le nostre applicazioni per Revit. Quindi il BIM sta sicuramente guadagnando terreno in Italia.

Inoltre, la maturità del BIM varia molto da una regione all'altra. Soprattutto nelle città del nord Italia, come Milano, Bergamo e Brescia, le aziende stanno già operando ad un livello di maturità BIM elevato, simile a quello dei paesi BIM avanzati. Vedremo che i primi progetti grandi e internazionali sono stati realizzati con il BIM, e successivamente seguiranno i progetti più piccoli.

Quali sfide ci sono quando si tratta dell'adozione del BIM?


In primo luogo, il panorama italiano è piuttosto frammentario: ci sono molti piccoli studi di progettisti sparsi su tutto il territorio nazionale. Ci vorrà del tempo perché tutti investano nella conoscenza, nella formazione e nel software necessario per il BIM. Inoltre, l'incompatibilità del software e la burocrazia possono essere problemi per iniziare con il BIM. Queste sono alcune cose che rallentano l'adozione del BIM, ma non c'è dubbio che il BIM è il futuro, anche in Italia.

Qual è l'approccio del governo al BIM?


Il governo sta decisamente sostenendo lo sviluppo del BIM. È stato emanato un decreto BIM con un piano pluriennale che stabilisce che tutti i progetti pubblici devono essere realizzati con il BIM nel 2022. A partire dal gennaio 2019 questo sarà un requisito per tutti i progetti di valore superiore a 100 milioni di euro; nel 2021 per i progetti più complessi e nel 2022 per tutti i progetti pubblici. Questo darà alle imprese più piccole un po' di tempo per prepararsi al BIM. Inoltre, è in fase di elaborazione una norma italiana: la UNI 11337. Diverse parti di questa norma sono già state pubblicate, fornendo linee guida e un quadro di riferimento per la gestione dei processi informativi digitali.

Ci sono altri modi per accelerare l'adozione del BIM?


Ciò che aiuterà è la spinta dei produttori a mantenere una posizione competitiva. Sempre più spesso le società di progettisti MEP prendono in considerazione la qualità degli oggetti BIM nella scelta del produttore. Pertanto, i produttori italiani, orientati a livello internazionale, lavorano con il BIM da tempo come parte della loro strategia. I produttori che sono in affari con paesi come l'Olanda, il Regno Unito o l'Australia, hanno già abbracciato il BIM per soddisfare la domanda di contenuti BIM. Chi vuole far parte di grandi progetti internazionali, non può rimanere indietro. Inoltre, vediamo che questi produttori stanno anche investendo tempo nella formazione degli ingegneri MEP per lavorare con Revit e BIM, il che aiuta ad aumentare l'adozione del BIM.

Cosa possono imparare gli altri paesi dagli italiani quando si parla di BIM?


In Italia la qualità non è solo una parola. Nella mia esperienza, tutto viene fatto con passione e con attenzione al dettaglio. Da un lato, questo può ritardare i processi. Dall'altro lato, assicura anche la qualità per la quale i prodotti italiani sono conosciuti in tutto il mondo. Di conseguenza, gli italiani di solito impiegano più tempo, valutano i potenziali problemi e tutte le opzioni prima di prendere una decisione. Tuttavia, questo significa anche che i risultati saranno probabilmente impressionanti. Questo diventa chiaro se si considerano i notevoli progetti BIM già realizzati in Italia, come il tunnel del Brennero, il Teatro alla Scala e il Citylife Building di Milano.

La ricerca della qualità si riflette anche nell'interesse per l'Extended MEP Content Standard, che viene abbinato a molteplici standard internazionali. Quando parliamo con i produttori italiani sentiamo che sono alla ricerca di uno standard BIM che garantisca la qualità dei contenuti in Italia e su scala più globale.

Abbiamo anche ricevuto un feedback positivo dai porogettisti italiani che utilizzano gli oggetti BIM di MEPcontent, in quanto hanno potuto constatare la qualità del contenuto garantito dall'EMCS.

Qualche consiglio finale per iniziare con il BIM?


Il contenuto è molto importante per la qualità del tuo progetto BIM. Quindi, se sei un progettista, assicurati di lavorare con contenuti di alta qualità. Se sei un produttore, tieni presente che le soluzioni BIM che offri sono principalmente a beneficio dei progettisti.

Inoltre, è facile trovare un fornitore di software in grado di creare modelli BIM, ma è più importante trovare un partner BIM innovativo e specializzato nel settore MEP che sappia di cosa hanno bisogno i produttori e i progettisti, ora e in futuro.
